TMS Therapy- Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation

Advanced Treatment for Depression

While the exact cause of depression is not known, the leading scientific theory is that it is caused by an imbalance of the brain's neurotransmitters, which are chemical messengers that send signals between brain cells.

TMS therapy uses an FDA-cleared device to deliver a targeted pulsed magnetic field, similar to what is used in an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) machine. This magnetic field stimulates areas of the brain that are underactive in people with depression. Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation is not electroconvulsive therapy.

Where Can I Get TMS Therapy Near Me?

TMS therapy at WellSpan Philhaven is provided by licensed, certified medical professionals in an office setting. TMS therapy is currently offered at our Mt. Gretna location and Concord Rd. - York location. It is a non-invasive, non-drug therapy available only by prescription. For patients who have not found satisfactory improvement from medications, TMS may be an option that your provider can discuss with you.

Is TMS Therapy Effective?

TMS makes long-term remission possible. Many people's depression symptoms significantly improve or go away after four to six weeks of treatment with TMS.

Is TMS Therapy Safe?

TMS therapy has been administered in more than 3.5 million treatment sessions to date. It is safe and easy to tolerate and has patented precision technology to ensure you receive the right dose to the right location, every time.

TMS is free from side effects often associated with antidepressant medications. There is no negative effect on memory or sleep. Some patients experience mild to moderate pain or discomfort at or near the treatment site during the first week of treatment. This is usually temporary.

During treatment:

  • The coil delivers focused magnetic stimulation directly to the target areas of the brain.
  • You’ll hear a clicking sound and feel a tapping sensation on your head.

After treatment:
